The Do's and Don'ts of a Meeting

For a meeting/conference/ or discussion to be successful, there are many aspects of communication, organization, and information analysis that have to be followed. This will result in all the participants in the meeting contributing effectively to the topic, and a higher level of communication all together. The following are the do's and don'ts for a meeting.

The Do's
  1. Come in early to set up for the meeting.
  2. Have a well organized plan for the meeting that covers all the topics you want to discuss.
  3. Make sure to use good body language when speaking in front of others.
  4. Ask questions pertaining to the subject at hand.
  5. Listen to others opinions and feedback.
  6. Dress appropriately for the occasion.
  7. Mentally rehearse your presentation a few times.
  8. Come prepared, with the proper information and background knowledge on the subject.


The Don'ts
  1. Don't come late or leave the meeting early.
  2. Don't keep your cellphone on you as it acts as a distraction.
  3. Do not eat at the meeting.
  4. Don't be culturally disrespectful (know your audience).
  5. Don't talk with your back faced to the members of the discussion.
  6. Don't interrupt others when they are talking.
  7. Don't discriminate or be close minded to ideas other than your own.
  8. Don't end the meeting without closure (audience is puzzled).

  4. Thanks a lot for the feedback everyone! In regards to Booster Juices question, these dos and don'ts have a major effect on the presenter in the real world. These are guidelines that are set up so that any type of meeting can be ran successfully. Regardless if its a sports meeting, a brief meeting, a debate, or a conference, these steps will all contribute to the presenters success.

  5. Good job done on particular topic, But there is always question in my mind whether its is good to have a meeting in regular intervals in office or not when participants are not involved in any of the discussion? what is you opinion?

  6. Thank you Khushvir, and that's a great question! Personally I feel that this is a problem that many company face in their organizations when hosting continuous meetings throughout the year. This basically creates an atmosphere that the participants in the meeting hold no interest in the subject at hand, which will further result in bad feedback. If the individual in the meeting has nothing to do with the topic of the discussion, for efficiency purposes it would be best to not have the individual participate in your meeting.

  7. you have done a great job on describing what you are talking about. I really like your blog. But for me the "donts" at a meeting students tend to do that in class all the time. So its hard for us not to lay on the table, play with our phones or talk while someone else is talking

  8. Thanks a lot for the compliment, and I can definitely relate to that. I feel that a lot of the times in class members of a discussion are usually forced into the meeting. This usually results in a low level of interest, which further results in many people taking part in some of the don'ts during a meeting.

    I personally found both the do's and dont's helpful myself and I have taken a mental note as i'm sure it's going to help me implement all of these great tips in my future meetings.
